Transit Custom Lower Torque (Dogbone) Mount Insert – Which Mount Do You Have?
If you’ve been searching for a Transit Custom lower torque mount insert, you’ve probably already discovered something frustrating: not every Transit Custom uses the same lower torque mount.
While they may look similar at first glance, Ford fitted three different versions of the lower engine torque mount across the Transit Custom range, so choosing the correct insert is essential.
At Polybush, we’ve developed our 40DQ Lower Torque Mount Insert to fit only one specific manual transmission mount. In this guide, we’ll explain the differences between all three mounts, show you how to identify yours, and explain why upgrading the original rubber insert with polyurethane is such an effective modification.

What Does the Lower Torque Mount Do?
The lower torque mount (sometimes called the lower engine mount, torque link or dogbone mount) connects the engine and gearbox assembly to the subframe.
Its job is to:
- Control engine movement during acceleration and braking.
- Reduce wheel hop.
- Prevent excessive drivetrain movement.
- Improve gear changes by keeping the drivetrain more stable.
- Reduce shock loads through the drivetrain.
Like most factory mounts, Ford uses soft rubber to isolate vibration. Over time, that rubber compresses, softens and eventually begins to split, allowing more engine movement than intended.
This often results in:
- Clunky gear changes.
- Increased engine movement.
- Excessive rocking when pulling away.
- Wheel hop under hard acceleration.
- A less precise driving feel that might knock or bang.

Three Different Lower Torque Mounts
One of the biggest misconceptions is that every Transit Custom uses the same lower torque mount. It doesn’t.
Ford produced three different lower torque mount designs, two of which are found on manual models and one that’s fitted to automatic vehicles.
Although they all perform the same job, their dimensions and internal rubber construction differ significantly, meaning one insert cannot fit them all.
The easiest way to tell them apart is by their overall width.
- Short & Wide – Approximately 6 inches wide (Automatic models only)
- Tall & Wide – Approximately 6 inches wide (Manual models)
- Narrow – Approximately 5 inches wide (Manual models and compatible with Polybush 40DQ)
Vehicle Applications
These lower torque mount designs are found across the following Ford vehicles:
- Ford Transit Custom V362 (2013–2023)
- Ford Transit V363 (2013–2023)
- Ford Tourneo Custom V362 (2013–2023)
Please note that fitment depends on the exact gearbox type, mount design, and OEM part number, not simply the vehicle model or year.
Before ordering your Polybush 40DQ insert, always confirm that your vehicle is fitted with the 5-inch-wide Narrow lower torque mount and matches one of the compatible OEM part numbers listed below.
Short & Wide Mount (Automatic Models Only)

This is the lower torque mount fitted to automatic Transit Custom models.
As the name suggests, it has a shorter overall height but is approximately 6 inches wide.

If your Transit Custom has an automatic gearbox, this is likely the mount you’ll have.
Tall & Wide Mount (Manual Models)

The Tall & Wide mount is fitted to certain manual Transit Custom models.
Although it’s taller than the automatic version, it’s still approximately 6 inches wide, making it noticeably larger than the mount our insert is designed to fit.

Narrow Mount (Manual Models – Compatible with Polybush 40DQ)

The third design is the narrow lower torque mount, measuring approximately 5 inches wide.
This is the mount that our 40DQ Lower Torque Mount Insert was specifically engineered around.
If your Transit Custom has one of the following OEM part numbers, our insert will fit correctly.

How Do I Know Which Mount I Have?
Fortunately, identifying the correct mount is straightforward.
If your Transit Custom has an automatic gearbox, it will use the Short & Wide mount, which is not compatible with the Polybush 40DQ insert.
If your van has a manual gearbox, you’ll have one of two possible mounts:
- Tall & Wide (approximately 6 inches wide) – Not compatible
- Narrow (approximately 5 inches wide) – Compatible with Polybush 40DQ
Comparing your existing mount against the imagery and measuring its width is the quickest way to confirm which version you have before ordering.

Why Fit a Polybush Insert Instead of Just Replacing the Mount?
The Transit Custom lower torque mount is a component that works hard every time you accelerate, change gear, tow, or load the drivetrain.
The weakness in the original design is the relatively small amount of rubber supporting the mount. Over time, the repeated movement and stress placed through this area can cause the rubber to flex excessively, fatigue, and eventually tear itself apart.
Once the rubber has split or separated, the mount can no longer control engine movement effectively. This can lead to:
- Excessive engine movement.
- Clunks or knocks when accelerating or changing gear.
- Increased drivetrain shunt.
- Reduced gear change quality.
- A less refined driving experience.

The Polybush 40DQ insert has been designed to support the original mount by filling the existing voids within the OEM rubber bush.
By filling these spaces, the insert reduces the amount of uncontrolled movement and prevents the original rubber from constantly over-stressing itself. The result is a much more stable and durable lower torque mount that can withstand the demands of everyday driving, towing, and commercial use.
Fitting a New Mount?
If you’ve just replaced your lower torque mount, fitting the Polybush 40DQ insert at the same time is the ideal opportunity to protect your investment.
A new OEM mount starts life in perfect condition, and adding the insert helps reduce unnecessary movement from day one, helping the mount stay stronger for many more miles.

Existing Mount Failed?
If your original mount has already torn, split, or failed, it will need to be replaced first.
The Polybush 40DQ insert is designed to reinforce a good-condition mount, not repair one that has already broken down.
Fit a new OEM-quality mount, add the Polybush insert, and you’ll have a lower torque mount that’s ready for many thousands of miles of reliable driving.
Benefits of the Polybush 40DQ Insert

- Reduces excessive engine movement.
- Supports the original rubber bush.
- Prevents the mount from over-flexing.
- Improves throttle response.
- Gives more positive gear changes.
- Reduces drivetrain movement.
- Improves towing stability.
- Provides significantly greater durability than the original rubber design.
For many Transit Custom owners, this is one of the simplest and most effective upgrades available for improving drivetrain control and extending lower mount life.
Why Polyurethane?
Unlike conventional rubber, polyurethane doesn’t deteriorate in the same way.
It is highly resistant to:
- Oil contamination.
- Diesel spills.
- Road salt.
- UV exposure.
- Ozone.
- Age-related cracking.
Where rubber gradually softens and collapses, polyurethane maintains its shape and stiffness for many years, giving more consistent performance over the life of the vehicle.
Will It Increase Vibration?
This is probably the question we’re asked most.
Because the insert reduces engine movement, on higher-mileage 2.2L vehicles you may notice a slight increase in vibration at idle, particularly when the engine is cold.
However, once driving, most owners find the improvement in drivetrain control far outweighs the small increase in transmitted vibration.
The result is a van that feels tighter, more connected and noticeably more refined when changing gear or accelerating.

If your mount carries one of the following part numbers, you’re good to go:
- 1771506
- 1786184
- 2015369
- BK21-6P082-AC
- BK21-6P082-AD
- BK21-6P082-AE
Checking this before ordering ensures you’ll receive the correct insert first time and helps avoid unnecessary returns.
A Small Upgrade That Makes a Big Difference
The lower torque mount may be a relatively small component, but it has a significant influence on how your Transit Custom feels to drive.
If your van suffers from excessive engine movement, vague gear changes or drivetrain shunt, fitting the correct Polybush insert is an effective, affordable upgrade that restores precision without compromising everyday usability.
Just remember: our 40DQ insert is designed exclusively for the 5-inch-wide Narrow manual lower torque mount. A quick check of your mount’s width and part number before ordering is all it takes to ensure the perfect fit.
