If you’ve been searching for a Transit Custom lower torque mount insert, you’ve probably already discovered something frustrating: not every Transit Custom uses the same lower torque mount.
While they may look similar at first glance, Ford fitted three different versions of the lower engine torque mount across the Transit Custom range, so choosing the correct insert is essential.
At Polybush, we’ve developed our 40DQ Lower Torque Mount Insert to fit only one specific manual transmission mount. In this guide, we’ll explain the differences between all three mounts, show you how to identify yours, and explain why upgrading the original rubber insert with polyurethane is such an effective modification.
The lower torque mount (sometimes called the lower engine mount, torque link or dogbone mount) connects the engine and gearbox assembly to the subframe.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that every Transit Custom uses the same lower torque mount. It doesn’t.
Ford produced three different lower torque mount designs, two of which are found on manual models and one that’s fitted to automatic vehicles.
Although they all perform the same job, their dimensions and internal rubber construction differ significantly, meaning one insert cannot fit them all.
The easiest way to tell them apart is by their overall width.

Before ordering your Polybush 40DQ insert, always confirm that your vehicle is fitted with the 5-inch-wide Narrow lower torque mount and matches one of the compatible OEM part numbers listed below.
This is the lower torque mount fitted to automatic Transit Custom models.
As the name suggests, it has a shorter overall height but is approximately 6 inches wide.

If your Transit Custom has an automatic gearbox, this is likely the mount you’ll have.
The Tall & Wide mount is fitted to certain manual Transit Custom models.
Although it’s taller than the automatic version, it’s still approximately 6 inches wide, making it noticeably larger than the mount our insert is designed to fit.

The third design is the narrow lower torque mount, measuring approximately 5 inches wide.

Fortunately, identifying the correct mount is straightforward.
If your Transit Custom has an automatic gearbox, it will use the Short & Wide mount, which is not compatible with the Polybush 40DQ insert.
If your van has a manual gearbox, you’ll have one of two possible mounts:

The Transit Custom lower torque mount is a component that works hard every time you accelerate, change gear, tow, or load the drivetrain.
The weakness in the original design is the relatively small amount of rubber supporting the mount. Over time, the repeated movement and stress placed through this area can cause the rubber to flex excessively, fatigue, and eventually tear itself apart.
